sabbatical like all good books, one of my previous books, the communist party book, i had a send bat cal back in 2017 instead of going -- going back to china, i decided to go to singapore where i had a very nice offer from the school of international study, and i can't say enough good things about aris as an indisposition the people there very hospitallable to me ask a great place, great institution to be but singapore is physically right in the center of the region so you can literally get everywhere within an hour's plane night, and i did. got all over the region in part due to the fact i was also simultaneously on the department of state's international speakers program, and i gave something like 40 lectures in ten countries in six months. every southeast asian country sent laos and india. got around physically and i went back the tolling year in 2018 for the summer, good part of the summer, to the institute for southeast asian studiys in singapore and finished up the field research in malaysia and indonesia that summer. so, that's the context how this project came about. second sort
